“There Will Be Typos.”

Perfection keeps you poor. Perfection also keeps you stuck. There will be typos. This blog is a place for me to share my thoughts, rants, ideas, and tips on breaking out of creative resistance and what it’s like being a writer over 40. It’s a creative space to help ideas grow organically and creatively.  Hopefully it’s making a difference and inspiring you to write from your heart.  Read More

7 Signs You are In Resistance. Resistance is a Shapeshifter.

7 Signs You are In Resistance. Resistance is a Shapeshifter.

Resistance is a Shapeshifter.Resistance is not something you can point at. It is not visible. Just like gravity, we see the results of it, but we cannot put it in a jar and show it to you. Try to point to resistance, where is it? It’s in the air. It’s on our smartphones, computers, and tablets. It’s everywhere we look even if we can’t see it. It’s a thought that makes you put down the pen or walk away from the keyboard. The biggest trick of resistance is that it creates doubt.Doubt is resistance’s favorite operating system. It takes a...

Are you Writing In the Right Direction?

Are you Writing In the Right Direction?

I decided to take the long route. I rented a cabin in Long Beach, Washington to get away for five days from Portland, Oregon so I could write. The cabin had no wifi or TV. It was perfect. I could have taken the fastest route, a 2 1/2 hour drive, but I was sick of driving on Highway 26, which has become too familiar, too crowded and boring. I trusted my GPS and said f*ck it I’m going to drive an extra 25 minutes in order to see new places and experience new terrain and enjoy the 2 hour and 45 minute drive.  Until…  Two hours and ten...

Write With Me Day #30 Write or Die!

For the month of November 2017 I took on a personal challenge to post a facebook live event on my facebook page.  What a fun time! It was terrifying, hilarious, filled with so many surprises. The overall theme was how to break through resistance when it comes to writing. I use the book War of Art to guide myself and my audience through the process of what it takes to sit down and write everyday. This was in celebration of National Novel Writing Month, but my theme was to encourage people to write their true stories and to break down...

Why Being A Writer Matters Now More Than Ever

Why Being A Writer Matters Now More Than Ever

In a world of 7 billion people and counting, with hundreds of millions of books, blogs, web pages, essays, articles and poems you might wonder if you even matter in a world saturated with so many options. The conclusion is that even with more and more people writing the answer is still yes. You matter because you are here. When we consider that we will never know the answer to the mystery of our human existence the best we can do it is to celebrate, help each other, and make a difference. We make a difference by serving as an example to...

Use Your Muscle Memory to Push Your Motivation.

Use Your Muscle Memory to Push Your Motivation.

Everything is a mindset, which means you have the ability to shift your mindset and start living into the life you want at any given second, no joke. For writers this means start writing, or write more (or insert your favorite creative project.) If you’re slacking on your writing now is the time to re-up. What I mean by mindset is that regardless of the situation you are in, or how your situation is presenting itself, you have the control to view this in a new light and to prevail. The main concern of most writers is this: “I don’t...

3 Ways to Get Out of A Rut and Write

3 Ways to Get Out of A Rut and Write

Being stalled as a writer happens to the best of us, from best selling authors, to poets, to journaling, to first time bloggers. The day seems to always come when a writer sits down to write and suddenly nothing happens, nada, just panic and silence. For some people this kind of stuckness gets masked by active procrastination. For instance the previous sentence was written at 7am. It is now eleven-thirty. I have spent the past four hours sorting my laundry, looking up travel locations in Italy, and creating a new smoothie recipe, which then...

Start Procrastinating!

Start Procrastinating!

“Procrastination is the bad habit of putting off until the day after tomorrow what should have been done the day before yesterday.” ~Napoleon Hill~ You read it right. I said, “Start” procrastinating. Why? Because I’ve noticed that some of my most productive friends and colleagues are true procrastinators.  They fall into a type of procrastinators that I call “The Do-ers”. They simply Do what has to be done. Sometimes this comes with a cost. Basically they put off things that don’t serve their purpose, in order to be completely...

The Horror. The Blank Page.

The Horror. The Blank Page.

The blank page. Empty, oddly silent. It is both a  terrifying place, yet a place of possibility. Depending on what you’re writing,  the blank page can be fun or a total freak out. It is especially hard when you are writing a memoir or writing stories that are personal.  The closer you get to the private moments the more you might fear what people think, but it’s in the private moments that you tap into a universal place for all of us to relate to. Your job as a writer is to let it all out. Your stories...

Walking Off A Cliff: Writer’s Block

“It’s not like you don’t have a choice, because you do — you can either type, or kill yourself.” ~ Anne Lamotte ~ The truth is that most writers don’t like to write. Here is what they like: to have already written. Writers block sucks, but is there really such a thing? Seth Godin writes about “talkers block”: “No one ever gets talker’s block. No one wakes up in the morning, discovers he has nothing to say and sits quietly, for days or weeks, until the muse hits, until the moment is right, until all the...

Give Up Trying To Fit In.

Give Up Trying To Fit In.

If you haven’t noticed yet, there is only one you. As much as you’d like to think that you’re just like everyone else, you’re not. The hard part is staying you. What I mean is people will try to talk you out of being you. Most people want you to be “normal” or to “fit in”, but that just means giving up your personal freedom and conforming or becoming invisible. Seth Godin, bestselling author and world-class marketing expert says,”Fitting in is a short term strategy. Standing out pays off in the...
